The history of how the Olde English Bulldogge came to be.
The Olde English Bulldogge was developed in the early 1970's by David Leavitt, of Coatesville, PA. Mr. Leavitt used a line breeding scheme that was designed and developed by Ohio State University for breeding cattle. The goal was to recreate a specific breed of bulldogge with the look, health, and athleticism of the original bullbaiting dogs, but without the extreme tenacity. The foundation crosses consisted of 1/2 English Bulldog, the other half, Bull Mastiff, American Pit Bull Terrier, and American Bulldog. After many carefully planned crosses, the Olde English Bulldogge emerged and began to breed true. The Olde English Bulldogges from these foundation dogs are the only true Original Olde English Bulldogges they are also called Leavitt bulldogges ,if your dogs cannot be traced back to these foundation dogs then they are not genuine Olde English Bulldogge's. There are lots of dogs out there being called olde English Bulldogges but Ethically they are a hybred not a true Olde English Bulldogge. . The Olde English Bulldogge is a thinking breed, they are very loyal, loving, and very outgoing. They are very sensitive and bond closely with their owner and family. They get along well with other animals and love cats. They can be very territorial when it comes to their property and should be introduced to other dogs with care. There is a certain degree of same sex aggression, but training can overcome this problem. . . The Olde English Bulldogge is very accepting of strangers, they seem to just love life and love everyone. However their friendliness is the result of their profound intelligence and absolute confidence, they can and will form their own perspective of people, their environment, and situations. This is just an amazing breed of dog plain and simple. With this breed being accepted into the CDHPR which is the foundation stock program for the United Kennel Club this is the first step to full recognition as the purebred that the true Olde English Bulldogge is.
